Pictures of Things

The Knight Rider birthday cake, complete with canal. For the uninitiated, the canal joke comes from an episode of The Simpsons in which they watch the television show Knight Boat, a parody of Knight Rider. Every week, the villain gets away, but just as he flees, Knight Boat exclaims, "Look, Michael! A canal!" Bart then laments, "Every week there's a canal! Or an inlet, or a fjord!" Which one of these people is Ben Stein? (Ben Stein also used the same bathroom I use when he visited Miami in January. John Stossel did the same, but I didn't get my picture taken with John Stossel.)

The Great Styrofoam Couch Caper

This picture represents the beginning of the Styrofoam couch project. How did it begin, you ask? Two giant blocks of Styrofoam were delivered to the architecture building next door at the beginning of the year. Matt and I wondered about them as they sat there all year long, doing nothing. After re-bunking our beds toward the end of the year, we realized that there was room enough for a couch, but we didn't want to pay for a couch. The logical thing to do, of course, was to make one out of the Styrofoam blocks. Matt called the Dean of the School of Art and Architecture and asked if he could use one of them. The Dean enthusiastically agreed, adding that he had wanted them gone for a long time.

In the above picture, Matt begins sawing off the end of the Styrofoam block to make the couch six feet long. The entire Styrofoam block was about fifteen feet long.

Having sawed the couch into a six foot piece, it was now necessary to make it three feet deep. It looks to be about five feet deep now.

More sawing. Styrofoam is a lot tougher than you'd think. All totaled, it took us a week to hew the couch down to its final size. That's about five hours of work, I suppose. Once the couch was small enough, we brought the rough block into our room and continued cutting it there. Some of the ladies took a vested interest in the project and purchased foam padding and fabric with which to upholster the couch. That didn't get done so much -- but next year, we will be triumphant! Well, the last time I had my hair cut was March, 2002. This picture was taken on May 3, 2003. It was time for a haircut.

So I got a haircut. And they dyed my hair a little bit. (Pictures of me by Catherine Jean. And yes, they're out of focus. And I scanned them from her contact sheet.)

Back to Main. I command it!
